Worldwide Boat, Yacht and Radio / MMSI Registration

Where to register your boat?
When you purchase a motor or sailing vessel it is very important to decide on the best suitable country to register your yacht. There are many different countries that offer a favorable registration but each of them has pros and cons. It is important that you understand these before deciding on where to register. When you decide on a country to be registered, the vessel is subject to the laws of the country of registration. It is therefore important that the boat registration country you have registered in, offers the conveniences that you need.

Let us register your boat in the country that is best suited for your vessel. We currently offer registrations in Holland, Belgium, Delaware, Malta, Poland and the UK. Have a look at the detailed descriptions and decide which country is best for you or if you are confused contact us by phone, real time chat or email.

Private use versus commercial use
It is also important to know that some countries have an easy registration for private use vessels but not for commercial use vessels or the other way around. We can currently register your boat for private use in the UK or Malta.

Let us take care of your mandatory Radio / MMSI license from 149 Euro / $169 USD
We can provide you with same-day delivery of an MMSI radio license in order to use an MMSI, ATIS, and Callsign for your vessel. This official radio license, that will be issued by the UK Telecom Authorities, will license you to use a VHF, AIS, and EPIRB on your boat AND IT DOES NOT MATTER UNDER WHICH FLAG YOU ARE REGISTERED. The license will be valid for 10 years as long as you don’t have changes in your equipment!

To help you decide on where to register you boat - here is a simple guide;

Private use versus commercial use
It is also important to know that some countries have an easy registration for private use vessels but not for commercial use vessels or the other way around. We can currently register your boat for private use in the UK or Malta.

The first thing to understand is that under which flag you sail has nothing to do with your nationality! All the registrations we offer are available to any nationality. In some cases we need to put the ownership of your vessel in a new dormant company (that you own) in order to comply with the rules but this is only an advantage, as these companies also offer you protection from liability and have several other advantages.

The Dutch registration is actually a document of ownership but in that capacity, is accepted in most European countries when arriving in a port and handing over your documents. The only country where the Dutch document occasionally gives problems is Portugal and therefor we recommend clients that visit Portugal to use one of our other registrations, which are actual flag registrations and accepted all around the world. The Dutch ICP document can be obtained in 3 days, so it is ideal if you just bought a boat in another country and need to bring it home to where you live within Europe.

The Belgium registration is an actual flag registration and is therefore accepted around the world with no issues at all. The nice thing about the Belgium registration is that it is valid for 5 years. There is a small, one-time tax to be paid if you register in Belgium and it depends on the age of the boat (see details on our site). IMPORTANT: The Belgium government wants to make it a lot harder for non-Belgium citizens to register under Belgium flag and will introduce changes later in the year. We therefor recommend clients who want to use this option to register fast with us, as once you have the registration, it will still be valid for 5 years.

The Delaware (USA) registration is very straight forward with minimal paperwork, no survey needed and can be obtained within 3 days. It is valid around the world and is highly recommended.

The Malta flag is also available for any nationality but is used more by boat owners with larger yachts or for commercial operations as the fees are a bit higher than most other jurisdictions.

The United Kingdom (UK) registration entitles you to fly the red ensign flag which is held in high regard within the maritime community. The paperwork is not that much and the flag is valid for 5 years and offers a very easy renewal process. The registration is similar in the UK for both private use as well as for commercial use and the fees are the same.

The Polish flag is probably our best value flag as the registration process is simple, with no surveys to be done and the best part is; you get the registration for life, so no more renewals! Since Poland is a full European Union member, this flag document is accepted anywhere in the world and comes in 4 languages. We take care of the whole process for you and translate all your current boat papers into Polish as part of our fee.

There are several things to consider when deciding where to register your yacht.

  • Reputation
The reputation of a boat registration can be felt when a vessel arrives at a foreign port. Vessels registered in countries of higher reputation will find that they have less hassle, inspections and even will usually have lower insurance premiums.
  • Taxation on Purchase
When deciding on a country of registration, taxation is an important deciding factor. In some cases you can avoid VAT, sales tax, import duties and other taxes on the purchase of your yacht.
  • Taxation on Crew
The absence of income tax, corporation tax or other taxes can also be a deciding factor in selecting a country to register. If you register in a boat registration state that offers the crew to be paid with no income tax and/or social security tax, it can be very rewarding for both the crew as well as the owner of the vessel.
  • Taxation on Charter Income
Registering a vessel in a jurisdiction that does not charge any taxes on your charter business income can aso be a deciding factor.
  • Privacy
Some vessel owners consider privacy and confidentiality to be high on their list and will want to register in a country that protects both of these by law.
  • Maritime Law
This can also be a deciding factor, especially for mortgaged vessels since a lender will usually fly mortgage a vessel that has its jurisdiction in a country with a very reputable maritime law. If not the lender would have no protection in the case of repossession.
  • Assistance
When visiting a foreign port it is important to have a local assistance from your boat registration country in the event of passport issues, medical problems, a death, crew repatriation, crew replacement or dealing with local authorities.
  • Protection
Protection can be provided by military vessels of the boat registration state. Most boat registration state countries navy are not equipped to offer any protection outside their own coastal waters. Larger boat registration states usually have a large navy who can offer protection around the world.
  • VAT
Is proof of VAT payment needed
